Fracking Banned in the Delaware River Basin

March 1, 2021

Last week, hundreds of League members responded to our call and emailed Governor Murphy, asking him to keep his promise to New Jersey voters and enact a ban on fracking in the Delaware River Basin. And your voices were heard.

On Thursday, February 25, 2021, Governor Murphy and the other Delaware River Basin Commissioners kept their promise and voted to enact a ban on fracking in the entire Delaware River watershed. The Commission also promised to develop rules that will permanently prohibit the export of water for fracking purposes and the import of hydrofracking wastewater for treatment in the Basin. The League and our partners will fight to make sure they follow through on their promise.

This move will not only protect the Delaware River, but will also help protect our planet from the devastation of climate change. Ending our dependence on fossil fuels is essential to achieving a livable climate on our planet.

THANK YOU for joining hundreds of other League members and advocates in standing up for our environment.

This victory is the result of years of advocacy by League members and our allies. But our work is not done yet. We will need to continue the fight to prohibit the storage of toxic fracking wastes such as drilling muds in the Basin. These wastes contain radon and toxic chemicals which would leach or be discharged into the Delaware and threaten the health of the ecosystem. We will continue to defend the watershed until it is fully protected from the dangers of fracking and all associated activities, but we can’t do it without you.

Can you pitch in to help us continue this fight? It is only through your support that the League of Women Voters can continue to advocate for policies that protect our planet from the physical, economic and public health effects of climate change.

Thank you for standing with us in the fight to combat climate change.

Sincerely,

Jesse Burns, Executive Director
