How You Can Help Inform Your Community

VOTE411 – WHAT IS IT?

VOTE411 is the national League’s nation-wide, online voter guide.  (Just as one contacts 911 in emergencies, decades ago one could dial 411 for information – hence the name “VOTE411.”  Voters go to VOTE411.org, put in their address, and see their entire ballot with each candidate’s responses to League questions.  Voters can then compare candidates and make an informed choice.  Unfortunately, too many candidates do not respond to the League’s invitation to participate.  Their names appear on the ballot but without further information.

HOW MEMBERS CAN CONTRIBUTE

We’re asking all members to go to VOTE411.org, check their own ballots, and urge candidates who haven’t responded to fill out the voter guide as soon as possible. You could send candidates a Facebook message, a tweet, or email them.  Sample Message: As your constituent, I want to learn about where you stand on the issues in our community. Could you please respond to VOTE411’s voter guide as soon as possible so voters in [INSERT YOUR CITY] can be informed before casting our ballots? Thank you.

If a candidate says that he or she has not received an invitation from the League, please let the Voter Service liaison (listed below) know so that we can send another.

Some members may wish to write a letter to the editor asking candidates to fill out VOTE411 voter guides.  Public requests encourage candidates to respond to the calls of voters.

All members should alert the Voter Service liaison about any county or local municipal and school board issues that should be addressed in the League’s questions.  Members are welcome to help with framing the questions during one of our regular meetings, usually in June.

Finally, more members are needed to enter the candidates and questions into the VOTE411 program, to send invitations and reminders to the candidates, and to answer any questions.  The job is basically secretarial and is busiest in August and early September.  The Voter Service liaison will train members new to the program and help solve problems that may arise.  The job is rewarding, and each of us will have fewer candidates to keep track of if more of us participate!  Volunteer by contacting the liaison.
